Worth your time
Nobody builds this alone. Here’s who I’ve learned from.
A short list, added to when something earns a place on it. If it’s here, I’ve used it in a real building or it changed how I think about the work.
No affiliate links and no arrangements with anyone on this page. Some of it competes with what I sell, which is rather the point – you should know what else is out there before you spend a dollar with me.
01Science of Reading: The Podcast. Podcast, hosted by Susan Lambert. Literacy research and what it actually looks like in a classroom. Season 11 opens with MTSS 101: What it is and what it isn’t, an interview with Joan Schumann of the International MTSS Association. Start there.
02Learning by Doing. Book, Solution Tree. DuFour, DuFour, Eaker, Many and Mattos. The collaborative team structure everything else sits on. If the teams don’t work, the tiers won’t either. Thomas W. Many also writes short pieces worth reading on their own: “A Rose by Any Other Name,” “It’s Not Pixie Dust, It’s Protocol,” and “A Guaranteed and Viable Curriculum is Not a Proper Noun.”
03Taking Action. Book, Solution Tree. Buffum, Mattos and Malone. The most concrete handbook I know for building the tiers: who owns what, and what each team is actually responsible for. Strong on what to do. You will still have to decide how it runs in your building on a Thursday.
04MiMTSS Technical Assistance Center. Organization. Michigan districts can get MTSS support from the state at no cost. Start there before you pay anyone, including me.
